It was after baby-sitting a friends dog for the weekend
that we decided to
look at Greyhounds. 'Nero' (Labrador/kelpie cross) came to stay for
2
days... he wore me out with ball throwing (for hours in 8 degree heat)
and
walkies! I realised that if I wanted a dog I had to be very careful
about
what would suit me - I needed a quiet dog that would be good -rather
than
energetic- company!
I rang Melita at Greyhound Angels the same weekend and Mia came to
stay the
Monday after.
The thing about Greyhounds is that they like to relax, and this was
the
clincher when it came to getting a dog for me! We now have two greyhounds,
Mia and Prince and I think they are the MOST WONDERFUL DOGS IN THE
WORLD!
Mia came first, she settled in after a couple of days but captured
our
hearts immediately! The things that surprised me most about Mia were;
She smells great all the time!
She is extremely polite about food (doesn't beg, snatch or jump at
dinner
time)
She loves people, but doesn't overwhelm or bother you for attention
(just
snuggles up close!)
Walking with her is like going with a training buddy - she doesn't
pull on
the lead or drag behind - just trots along with you! We walk everyday
in the
morning - great for both of us!
She is very loyal - and bonds hard with her family
She respects cats
She LOVES lying around the house and watching TV (Inspector Rex, cop
shows-
anything with dogs or sirens)
She is VERY intelligent - minimal training necessary (with no shouting
or
smacking!)
She is a real 'inside' dog - and very clean & tidy!
After a little while we decided she needed a friend - so we rang Melita
again and Prince joined the family. Prince was abandoned and had some
food
issues when he arrived... it literally took him 3 days to settle in
and work
out that meals would arrive regularly and not to worry! He has been
an angel
ever since - just as much fun to walk and just as smart! He was more
used
to being outside - but adapted to inside life in the blink of an eye!
These are beautiful dogs with immaculate habits and manners. I loved
not
having to train a puppy and yet they have as much fun in them as puppies
(at
rare energetic times!) and the best sense of humour I have ever seen
in a
dog!
I have lived with many different breeds of dogs, big and small and
I am an
absolute convert - Greyhounds it is from here onwards!
